Brazing exhaust manifold

    On one of my exhaust manifolds, the front face that bolts up to the head has rust pit marks on it. Similar to body work can I fill in the pit marks using a MIG weld and smooth them out with a file or will they not stick as the manifold is a casting. If not is there an alternative.

The exhaust leak seemed to be coming from directly around the engine and after checking around the exhaust manifold and gaskets on both the manifold and the donut between the manifold and the y pipe and not finding anything.

    • brazing works - but it is not strong, as does mig with either stainless welding rod or stainless wire, or high nickel arc welding rod. the latter two methods can be used on something that is going to heat cycle - never braze an exhaust manifold.

      • Jun 21, 2009 · brazing would definitely not work.. brazing isn't actually welding.. its more of a capillary attraction effect, just like when two pieces of glass get water in between then, cant pull them apart.. and brazing is done with oxy/ace which is way way way to hot for the 1 million gauge those manifolds are made out of..
      • heat the 2 peices of pipe at the joint until the brazing rod will melt when you touc it to the surface. it's just like soldering, except you are using brass and much higher heat. normally tho, slip fit pipes are held together with springs and the 2 pipes are usually a pretty tight fit. each peice of pipe should have a couple of hooks on them, you stretch the springs and hook them onto the hools on the pipes.

      • Similar mess on my Commander 6, but fortunately I found a good exhaust section. That’s definitely the best solution. For repair, I would consider making a thick rectangular steel piece with a large rectangular hole that can slip up from the bottom of the exhaust manifold and rest against the flange with the broken corners.

I knew about the exhaust manifold cracking and at purchase I had checked the manifold. After driving 1000 miles we lost the V band on the turbo so I went into the engine compartment to fix that and noticed the manifold crack in the same spot they all seem to do.       If you look carefully you'll see the cut line through the flange, pipe and the brazing. The two halves were then positioned around the pipe and 3/8" bolts were installed through the halves to bring it back to its original shape. It is ready to now install, and bolt up to the manifold.

We use to have a 9230 that had an appetite for breaking exhaust manifold bolts. I called the local CIH dealer & he sent a mechanic down to remove the manifold.

    I finally got the exhaust manifold off the '88 Accord that I'm rebuilding. I'm noticing, however, that most of the holes the studs were in are stripped bad enough that I'm expecting I won't be able to tighten the manifold down tightly enough when I'm ready to.

    Do not braze up and re-cut threads. It will have problems with the brass nut at manifold high temps. I believe arc welded nickel rod will work well, but it takes a really good welder to do it and the manifold has to be heated near cherry red before welding and then cooled slowly after. Manifolds tend to break after welding of any kind. Some said the exhaust note sounded better with the port divider, while others said it was better without. Therefore one would assume that the exhaust note is much more dependant on the type of exhaust system (single or dual), the use of headers, type of mufflers, compression ratio, cam profile, and so on.
